This is for you. THIS IS YOUR MOTHER’S DAY RAINBOW.
I saw it today, it was unbelievably striking. So much that this picture does not do it justice. A full semi-circle. Bold, clear, contrasting, beautiful colors against the most dreary grey backdrop. I have never seen a rainbow so clear, so awe-inspiring.
I felt a strong urge to share it, as if God were telling me He is specifically putting it out there for someone. Someone who desperately needs a reminder this Mother’s Day. A reminder of His overflowing mercy and grace, of His fight for you.
Wherever you’re at this Mother’s Day, no matter how heartbroken or discouraged you feel or how many times you’ve wanted to just give up, claim this rainbow. It is a promise. Rainbows symbolize God’s never-ending faithfulness. A covenant of His grace, they are a love letter to us.
Just for fun — some official definitions of “Rainbow”:
- “A phenomenon that is caused by reflection of LIGHT” (Wikipedia);
- “…Appears in the sky when the sun shines through rain” (Webster’s Dictionary)
Rainbows are quite literally a reflection of His light. Scientifically and spiritually. Light that bursts through our greyist of days, light when we don’t expect it and aren’t necessarily looking for it. I think He designed it that way. They are symbolic just as much as they are tangible evidence of Him. He IS light. It’s no wonder that rainbows represent redemption in the baby loss community.
Remember that this Mother’s Day, and claim this rainbow. Shelby, I hope you are reading this, too — this is your rainbow. 🙂 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful!
And HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to everyone reading this. No matter where you are in this unbelievably hard journey. You are a mother, whether you know it yet or not.

This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you,
and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
I set My rainbow in the cloud,
and it shall be for the sign of the covenant
between Me and the earth.
It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth,
that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;
and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you
and every living creature of all flesh;
the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
–Genesis 9:12-15
